TEHRAN — Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman on Friday blasted the latest Israeli missile attack on Syria near the capital Damascus, which has resulted in deaths and injuries.
“The Zionist regime’s continued aggression and attacks on Syria are a clear violation of the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and a flagrant violation of recognized international principles and regulations,” Nasser Kanaani stressed.
The Foreign Ministry spokesman added that the international community, particularly the United Nations Security Council, must fulfill its obligation to deal with the ongoing crimes and risky behavior of the Zionist regime.
“The Zionist regime’s repeated attacks on Syria are a violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of that country and will aid armed terrorists and maintain and strengthen their presence in Syria, which actually threatens the security of the region,” Kanaani noted.
He also expressed his surprise and sadness at the silence of international organizations and human rights defenders on such illegal behavior by the Israeli regime.
According to the ministry, the Israeli enemy launched an airstrike from the direction of the occupied Syrian Golan, adding that Syrian air defenses were able to intercept some of the incoming missiles.
On Friday morning, Syrian media said Israel attacked Damascus, killing three military personnel and wounding seven others.
The attack was the 17th of its kind by Israel against Syria since 2018.
After 2011, as Syria was gripped by a wave of widespread foreign-backed militancy and terrorism, attacks on the country from Tel Aviv began to increase significantly in size and regularity.
In response to the Israeli attack, the Syrian Foreign Ministry said the nation reserves the right to counter ongoing Israeli aggression with appropriate measures in accordance with international law and the United Nations Charter.
The ministry confirmed Israeli criminal acts of aggression with rocket blasts from the direction of the occupied Syrian Golan, targeting some points near Damascus, in two identical letters to the UN Secretary-General and the President of the Security Council, according to Syria’s official news agency SANA .
The ministry appealed to the UN and the Security Council to uphold their obligations under the UN Charter and to denounce such types of Israeli aggression.
He claimed that the failure of the Security Council to take the necessary steps to stop and denounce the Israeli regime’s repeated attacks showed the international organization’s inability to take responsibility for its actions and that it was not even doing the bare minimum fulfilled their commitments to maintain peace and security in the region and around the world.
It stressed that US aggression and violations of international law, occupying Northeast Syria, looting its oil and supplying weapons to terrorists hired by Washington are all needed to find a political solution and restore security and stability in Syria prevent are not possible to be separated from the Israeli attacks.
The attacks are being carried out in direct support of armed terrorist organizations perpetrating atrocities across Syria, the ministry said.
The Israeli regime, along with the US and other Western and regional partners, is a staunch sponsor of the terrorist organizations targeting the Damascus government.
