Who is Hadi Matar?

Salman Rushdie, the famous Golden House writer, was repeatedly stabbed by a man on Friday. Police later identified him as 24-year-old Hadi Matar from New Jersey.

Authorities are still checking his nationality and other criminal records, if any. In a media interaction, a New York City Police Officer, Maj. Eugene J. Staniszewski, told NBC News that a preliminary review of Hadi’s social media revealed that he harbored “sympathies with Shia extremism and the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, or IRGC.”

The boy reportedly had a passport to attend the lecture the British-American writer was scheduled to speak at. Authorities are still investigating the matter and trying to figure out the motive behind his attack, as they believe Matar acted alone in the incident and he had no accomplices.

The FBI is also assisting the NYPD in investigating the case. Authorities had asked the judge to issue a search warrant to search Matar’s electronic devices.

According to the police officer, Matar’s charges for the assault are yet to be decided and will be based on the author’s condition.

Speaking of Rushdie, his 1980s book The Satanic Verses has been the center of controversy since publication. This book is banned in Iran and several other Islamic nations.

This book has sparked several riots in the UK that have killed 45 people. In 1989, the ten leaders of Iran issued a fatwa against Rushdie. He demanded the writer’s death and offered a $3 million bounty on his head.

After receiving several death threats and a subsequent increase in his bounty, the writer was forced into hiding as part of a British government protection scheme. 9 years later he gradually came into the public eye and finally moved to the United States in 2000.

Since his return, he has continued to be vocal against religious extremism. However, the exact reason behind the attack on the writer is still under investigation.

However, authorities believe that Matar was sympathetic to the fatwa issued by the Iranian government.

According to a report published by NBC News, the youth has resigned from several public offices in support of Iran and in support of Shia extremism.
